Episode 219: Denver Ski Resorts

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!  Are the mountains calling to YOU?  If they are, Denver has some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the US.  With a very accessible international airport only a couple hours from the slopes, why go anywhere else?  From Aspen to Winter Park and everything in-between, the deep powder is ripe for the carving.

Where do you love to ski? Or are you more about the apres ski?

  1. Tetsuko and I ski regularly… haven’t been to Colorado in a while (2012), but my non-skiing notes from Winter Park are: “The town of Winter Park, CO has *a* movie theater. It plays *a* movie. Once per day. 7:00pm.” Probably thats changed by now,but if not that train sounds like a great option.

Also towards the end you were talking about the mental aspect. Every year is the same for me. An easy day first just to get the legs / balance / control back.

Slopes always look steeper from the top than the bottom. Any slope. Even the easy ones. Beginners should try and remember what it looked like from below.

Getting the first fall out of the way each year is vital so that you remember “that wasn’t so bad”

Outdoor skating is probably the closest thing you can do for prep. Needs to be slopes, so trail skaing aroud here is probably the closest analog. I found in-line skating on hills to be the best prep / maintenance as far as skiing mental preparation goes. Gets you in the mind set of turning to take speed off and keeps you in the habit of always keeping your knees bent.

As an aside when we went in 2012 we went mid-march. The weather then is good for mountain skiing as well as other stuff (for instance we drove down to Colorado Springs area to see Garden of the Gods, The Cliff Dwellings, some hot springs (of the river variety, that was awesome… you could reaagange rocks mixing river water with the spring water where the spring let into the river to get the temp you wanted) and Manitou Springs which is an awesome little town with several public spring-fed water fountains. At that time of year a hoodie was enough for outdoorsy non-skiing stuff.
