Episode 100: What We’ve Learned in 100 Episodes

We are beyond thrilled to be recording our 100th Episode! When we started recording this back in 2014 we weren’t sure how we’d keep coming up with new travel topics, but it turns out that new things are coming out all the time! From exciting itineraries, to world events, to bucket list trips, there is always something to talk about. We thought it would be fun to take a look back and remember some of the things that surprised us along the way.

We’d love to hear from you too if there is anything we’ve talked about that surprised or inspired you!

Episode 87: Traveling Through Reading and Reading to Travel

This week Outlander Travel is embracing it’s literary roots. You may remember me referring to my “previous life” as a librarian. This week I’ve invited some of my literary-minded, librarian “squad” to discuss how books can inspire travel, and how we can help you create itineraries that allow you to visit some of your favorite settings. Janet has worked for over 20 years as a librarian.  During that time she has had various roles; she has led books clubs, answered reference questions, helped children with their schoolwork and recommended books for purchase.  And then there’s her favorite task, helping people find a good book to read. Dan has worked connecting people and books for over twenty years in both bookstores and public libraries. He is the Adult Services Manager at our local library system and he co-manages programs for the library system around recreational reading, including author visits.

Books and travel go together perfectly. Listen in and discover some great ideas and resources for your vacation reads. Travel to Ireland through the novels of Maeve Binchy…Eat, Pray and Love around the world…explore the south of Pat Conroy…when we travel by book, the choices are endless!

Traveling abroad is exciting for many reasons. Sampling a new culture, visiting bucket list landmarks, trying an exotic new food or learning key phrases of a foreign language can help us broaden our horizons and see the world in a different way. But we also know that you still have to use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings, which incidentally is good advice when you’re home too! We’ve talked in the past about what to do when things go wrong, but tonight we thought we’d give some tips on how to avoid getting into those situations in the first place, so let’s get started!
Can you see the pickpocket in this video? See if you can spot the pros.

Episode 67: 100 Years of National Parks

Yellowstone National Park was created in 1872 “as a public park for the benefit and enjoyment of the people”, but it wasn’t until August 25, 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson signed an act creating the National Park Service that placed all of the parks were under one jurisdiction. Today there are over 400 National Parks and monuments, and this year the park service is celebrating its Centennial. With special free days as well as the “Every Kid In A Park” initiative there has never been a better time to visit a park near you, and we want to make sure you get the most out of your visit, so let’s get started!

Episode 66: Current Events & Travel

Zika, Chikungunya, ISIS – oh my! We travel to experience new cultures, sights, and wonders. But we also live in a world that is not at peace and bad things happen, both natural disasters and man-made conflict. When bad things happen, does it (or should it) affect your travel plans? We thought we would share our opinions on the matter and perhaps look more closely at the realities of the situation.

Have you ever changed your travel plans due to world events? Let us know how you handled it.

Episode 63: Tips for Really Long Flights

There is a famous adage about life that says it is not about the destination, but it’s about the journey. However, when traveling, it often really is about the destination, and the journey is just something to endure in order to finally reach that destination. When traveling halfway around the world, flying is really the best option. But how does one face flights that are 8, 12, or 17 hours in duration? What’s the real deal between Economy vs. Comfort vs. Business/First class? In-flight entertainment? How to help kids on long hauls? Listen up and learn all about it!

Episode 60: What Do You Collect While Traveling?

Travel is about making memories that last a lifetime and broadening your world view and your perspective. One thing that pretty much everyone does on vacation is buy souvenirs. Some of us have a “go to” item that we have to buy on every trip, thereby building a sort of memory collection to display and share with our family and friends. So let’s explore what some of those favorite souvenirs are!
